War Department Building
Mechanics' Hall, Richmond, Virginia
(Image originally published in the Richmond Dispatch, 30 June 1894.)

When the seat of government of the Confederacy was moved from Montgomery, Alabama to Richmond, Virginia, the Mechanics' Institute building was selected for use by the War Department.
Like many of the downtown district buildings, it was destroyed in the evacuation fire of 02 April 1865.

The War Department Guide

Welcome to The Confederate War Department. This website is dedicated to the preservation of War Between the States history and Confederate genealogical research. Great effort has been made in the creation (and maintenance) of this website, a labor that is time consuming, not financially profitable, but well worth the end results. It is hoped you will find the information contained on these pages both entertaining and informative.

Updates to The Confederate War Department are posted on the News from the Front Lines page, as changes occur with the website.

The War in Documents is for the examination of governmental papers which led to the formation and operation of the Confederacy.

The Historical Truth contains army organizational data, cabinet biographies, and listings of the three Confederate Congresses.

Confederate Genealogy offers basic genealogical research ideas, an index of my own lineal and collateral Confederate ancestors, and records available for purchase.

Finally, Command Transfers contains an index of other related websites to enjoy and support.
This section also includes earned Website Awards & Web Ring Memberships.
