Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery

Designed by Jewish Confederate soldier and world-renowned sculptor Sir Moses Ezekiel (28 October 1844-27 March 1917), this monument
depicts powerful images and statements in regard to the Confederate cause and the fighting spirit of Southerners, black and white.
A circle of 482 graves of Confederate soldiers and citizens (including Ezekiel) surround the memorial.

Monument Inscriptions:
"Victrix causa Diis placuit, sed victa Catoni."
(The victorious cause was pleasing to the Gods, but the lost cause to Cato.)

"Not for fame or reward, not for place or for rank, not lured by ambition, or goaded by necessity,
but in simple obedience to duty, as they understood it, these men suffered all, sacrificed all, dared all--and died."
-Rev. Dr. Randolph Harrison McKim, Confederate Chaplain (15 April 1842-15 July 1920)
